Based on the life of journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, who lived in an iron lung after childhood polio and, in his late thirties, sets out to lose his virginity with the help of a sex surrogate. Frank, funny, and unusually grown-up about disability and sexuality, a subject most films avoid entirely. Director Ben Lewin is himself a polio survivor. John Hawkes and Helen Hunt drew major awards attention.
