Sue Austin: Creating the Spectacle (Underwater Wheelchair)(2012)

British artist Sue Austin rebuilt an NHS wheelchair into a self-propelled underwater vehicle and filmed herself drifting through reefs and schools of fish, free in the open water. Made for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the footage flips the wheelchair from a symbol of limitation into one of pure freedom. The short underwater films are free online and have been seen by hundreds of millions. Whimsical, beautiful, and quietly radical.
