Sound of Metal(2019)

A heavy metal drummer loses his hearing rapidly and must reckon with what that loss means — for his sense of self, his relationship, his music, and his life. Won the Academy Award for Sound and Film Editing. The sound design is transformative — the film lets you hear through Ruben's changing ears. The Deaf community's response is worth reading alongside the film: some praise it, others critique it for centering hearing loss as tragedy. Paul Raci, who plays Ruben's mentor, is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) and CART user himself.
