A heavy metal drummer loses his hearing rapidly and must reckon with what that loss means, for his sense of self, his relationship, his music, and his life. Won the Academy Award for Sound and Film Editing. The sound design is transformative, the film lets you hear through Ruben's changing ears. The Deaf community's response is worth reading alongside the film: some praise it, others critique it for centering hearing loss as tragedy. Paul Raci, who plays Ruben's mentor, is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) and CART user himself.
