Best Picture winner at the 2022 Academy Awards. A hearing child of Deaf adults (Ruby) navigates her hearing identity, her family's fishing business, and her ambitions as a singer. Three of the four family roles played by Deaf or hard of hearing actors (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant). Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor — the first Deaf actor to win that award. The Deaf community's reaction is complex and worth reading: real representation, real Deaf actors, but the narrative remains centered on the hearing character's journey away from her Deaf family.
