Best Picture winner at the 2022 Academy Awards. A hearing child of Deaf adults (Ruby) navigates her hearing identity, her family's fishing business, and her ambitions as a singer. Three of the four family roles played by Deaf or hard of hearing actors (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant). Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor, the first Deaf actor to win that award. The Deaf community's reaction is complex and worth reading: real representation, real Deaf actors, but the narrative remains centered on the hearing character's journey away from her Deaf family.
